What's Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The term comes from Sanskrit—“Ayur” meaning life and “Veda” meaning science or knowledge—so Ayurveda means “the science of life.”
Developed and practiced in India, Ayurveda focuses on achieving balance between the body, mind, and spirit for overall health and well-being. It is based on the understanding of three doshas—Vata (air + space), Pitta (fire + water), and Kapha (water + earth)—which are energies believed to govern all bodily functions. Each person has a unique combination of these doshas, and maintaining their balance is key to good health.
Ayurveda uses:
1. Herbal medicines
2. Plant-based diets
3. Yoga and meditation
4. Detox therapies like Panchakarma
5. Lifestyle changes customized to the individual
Even today, Ayurveda is widely practiced across India and is recognized globally as a holistic, preventive, and natural approach to health.
